HC Deb 11 May 1948 vol 450 cc1957-8
46. Wing-Commander Hulbert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much foreign currency was allowed to British competitors in the recent thousand mile motor race in Italy.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps)

I am unable to trace any application for allowances of foreign currency to British competitors in the recent thousand mile motor race in Italy, and consequently no special allotments of foreign currency were authorised.

Wing-Commander Hulbert

Does not the right hon. and learned Gentleman think that it would have been desirable to have allowed these competitors to have received some assistance? Is he aware that this motor race has added great prestige to the motor car industry here, and that that was entirely due to private enterprise?

Sir S. Cripps

I am sure that if they had asked for it they would have had consideration.
