§ 58. Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyreasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer for what reason His Majesty's Government released £10,000,000 from sterling balances to the Royal Government of Egypt, beyond the sums agreed to in the agreements of 30th June, 1947, and 5th January, 1948.
§ Sir S. CrippsBecause the just application of the agreement called for it.
§ Colonel Crosthwaite-EyreSurely, if we are going to take this sort of interpretation of agreements irrespective of the hardship already incurred we shall land ourselves in an awful mess? Can the Chancellor of the Exchequer give us some indication that His Majesty's Government will adjust these sterling balances according to just settlements and not merely give away all our finances time and time again?
§ Sir S. CrippsWe shall get into a worse mess if we do not justly apply the agreements we have made.
