HC Deb 06 May 1948 vol 450 cc1454-5
59. Mr. Blackburn

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the estimated duration of the suspension of the removal of Communist and Fascist civil servants from work vital to the security of the State; and what steps are being taken in the meanwhile to safeguard the security of the State.

Sir S. Cripps

I hope the discussions on procedure with the Staff Side of the National Whitley Council will be finished very shortly. In the meantime, any civil servants believed to be within the scope of my right hon. Friend's statement of 15th March have been sent on leave.

Mr. Blackburn

While I thank the Chancellor of the Exchequer for that statement, may I ask him, in view of the misunderstandings referred to in "The Times" yesterday, if he will make it clear that the Prime Minister's policy will be fully implemented?

Sir S. Cripps

That has already been made clear.

Mr. Lipson

Can the Chancellor of the Exchequer say how many have been sent on leave?

Sir S. Cripps

I do not think that would be desirable.
