HC Deb 04 May 1948 vol 450 cc1072-3
15. Mrs. Jean Mann

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that there has been an acute shortage of school stationery and supplies in Lanarkshire; and if he will alleviate the situation.

Mr. Woodburn

I am aware that there has been such a shortage, and I am discussing with my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade whether the special reserve of paper for educational books can be increased in the next licensing period.

16. Mrs. Mann

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what complaints he has received concerning lack of or inadequate heating in Lanarkshire schools; and if steps are being taken to make the schools more comfortable for next winter.

Mr. Woodburn

A general complaint regarding the inadequate heating of some Lanarkshire schools has been received from the Lanarkshire Association of the Educational Institute of Scotland. Last year two specific complaints about Greenfield Public School, Burnbank, were made on behalf of parents. The Lanarkshire Education Committee are conducting an inquiry regarding all schools where heating is defective, in order that the worst cases may be dealt with first.
