HC Deb 04 May 1948 vol 450 cc1100-1
Mr. Oliver Stanley

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has any statement to make on the explosion yesterday which resulted in the death of Mr. Rex Farran.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Ede)

I am sure the House will be shocked, as I am, by this wicked outrage, and will wish to extend its sympathy to Mr. Rex Farran's relatives. I am unable at present to make any statement, but investigation by the police and His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Explosives is being continued.

Mr. Stanley

May I associate my hon. and right hon. Friends on this side of the House with what the Home Secretary has said about the outrage, which all of us deplore? Although, naturally, one would not press the Home Secretary to give information which might hamper the investigation of this crime, may I ask whether the right hon. Gentleman will remember that this is a matter in which the House and the country take a deep interest, and will give us whatever information, from time to time, he feels it is possible to give?

Mr. Ede

I thank the right hon. Gentleman. I realise how profoundly not only the House but the country is shocked by this occurrence, and I undertake that, as soon as I have any information which I can usefully give to the House, without interfering with the investigations that are going on, I shall give it.
