HC Deb 18 March 1948 vol 448 cc2272-3
35. Sir T. Moore

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why three policemen are employed all day at both Grosvenor Gate and Stanhope Gate regulating the traffic, instead of having that traffic controlled by traffic lights.

Mr. Ede

Traffic conditions at these points are exceptionally difficult, and it has not yet been found possible to evolve a scheme of control which would obviate the use of police.

Sir T. Moore

But surely there are more urgent and more important tasks for our very well trained and competent police to do than to man the crossings at these two gates?

Mr. Ede

This is a particularly difficult place at which to control traffic and no other way has yet been devised.
