§ 53. Mr. Yorkasked the Minister of Agriculture whether producers will be allowed to choose their own merchants for the sale of the 1948 wool clip.
§ 52. Colonel Ropnerasked the Minister of Agriculture whether he intends to allow farmers freedom of choice with regard to the merchants to whom they sell their 1948 wool clip.
§ 55. Mr. Odeyasked the Minister of Agriculture whether he intends to allow farmers freedom to choose their own 790 merchant with regard to the sale of their 1948 wool clip.
§ 56. Mr. Spearmanasked the Minister of Agriculture if he will give farmers freedom of choice in regard to the sale of their 1948 wool clip.
§ Mr. T. WilliamsFull freedom in the choice of merchant would be inconsistent with orderly arrangements for the efficient marketing of the 1948 wool clip. A recent recommendation to the Secretary of State for Scotland and myself by the Wool Advisory Committee advocated some relaxation of present arrangements, and that is being discussed with the respective farmers' unions. I hope that an announcement on the subject will be made shortly.
§ Mr. YorkIn view of what the Minister has just said about representations, perhaps it would be wise not to comment, but during these negotiations will the main principle be reconsidered?
§ Mr. WilliamsAs the hon. Member is aware, we are being advised by the Wool Advisory Committee, and their latest report is under consideration.
§ Colonel Gomme-DuncanDoes not the Minister realise that at the moment the auction arrangements in Scotland, as laid down by his Ministry, are thoroughly unsatisfactory?
§ Mr. WilliamsNo, Sir, I do not agree.
