HC Deb 08 March 1948 vol 448 cc790-1
54. Mr. York

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that French currant cuttings are being imported into this country without being certified as being free from disease; and whether he will take steps to prevent any further imports.

Mr. T. Williams

I have no knowledge of such importations but if the hon. Member will give me particulars I will have inquiries made.

Mr. York

If I produce evidence that this importation is taking place will the Minister take immediate steps to stop it?

Mr. Williams

I have already said that if the hon. Member will supply the evidence I will gladly look at it at once.

Mr. York

I want to establish this: Does the Minister consider that it is right for importations of this nature to be brought into the country, although they are not certified as free from disease?

Mr. Williams

I am not satisfied that such importation is taking place. If we get the evidence, then, of course, we will take the necessary steps.
