HC Deb 02 March 1948 vol 448 cc214-5
84. Lord Willoughby de Eresby

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider removing the Import Duty on page-turning appliances imported from America for the use of paralysed ex-Service men.

Mr. Bottomley

Pending the result of inquiries as to the possibility of suitable page-turning appliances being made in this country, I cannot see my way to recommend my right hon. and leaned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer to make on order exempting page-turning appliances from Customs duty.

Lord Willoughby de Eresby

In view of the very small amount of money which must be involved, and of the fact that it should be an obligation on the State to provide these men with page-turning appliances, will not the Minister consider remitting the Import Duty paid on them until suitable appliances are made in this country?

Mr. Bottomley

I will refer that matter to the Chancellor.
