HC Deb 29 June 1948 vol 452 c2001
49. Mr. York

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many dollars were made available to Eire during the first and second halves respectively of 1947 and for the first half of 1948; for what separate purposes were the dollars made available; and whether these totals include purchases by Government Departments acting on behalf of Eire.

Sir S. Cripps

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to the hon. and gallant Member for New Forest and Christchurch (Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre) on 10th May, 1948.

Mr. York

Is the Chancellor of the Exchequer aware of the bad effect on our own farmers of giving away dollars which could be used for buying feedingstuffs for them?

Sir S. Cripps

I am quite aware that everybody in the sterling area wishes he was the only user of dollars, and that nobody else was.
