HC Deb 12 July 1948 vol 453 c826
25. Colonel Ropner

asked the Minister of Transport whether he has any statement to make with regard to the freeing of Selby Toll Bridge and the construction of a new bridge.

Mr. Barnes

Work on detailed plans for a new bridge is to go forward, and negotiations for the purchase of the old bridge and the toll rights will coincide with the construction of the new bridge.

Colonel Ropner

Will the right hon. Gentleman remind the House that he and his Department have spent their time putting forward a series of reasons why a conclusion should not be reached in order to rid Selby of this toll bridge? Each of those reasons has been invalidated in turn. Will the right hon. Gentleman now find a reason why something should at last be done?

Mr. Barnes

I cannot enter into a Debate now on this rather difficult question.
