HC Deb 12 July 1948 vol 453 c825
22. Captain Marsden

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that many of the road maintenance men to be dismissed by the Surrey County Council Highways Committee will find it difficult to obtain other employment, having regard to their age and what action he proposes to take to ensure that these men find suitable alternative employment and that their superannuation rights are safeguarded.

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Barnes)

My request to the Surrey County Council was to release 107 men: the number actually released by April was 136. Superannuation rights are safeguarded by a direction by the Minister of Health extending the "disqualifying break of service" from one to five years.

Captain Marsden

If these men are having superannuation, is there any point whatever in discharging them from the work they are now doing?

Mr. Barnes

I thought that the matter had been made quite clear to the House. It is part of the economies in view of the necessity to cut capital investments
