HC Deb 08 July 1948 vol 453 cc583-4
72. Mr. Ronald Chamberlain

asked Mr. Attorney-General when the report of the committee on the leasehold system and allied matters, set up in February under the chairmanship of Lord Uthwatt, can be expected.

The Attorney-General (Sir Hartley Shawcross)

It is not yet possible to estimate when the Leasehold Committee will be in a position to make a report.

Mr. Chamberlain

Does my right hon. and learned Friend realise that during the time this committee is sitting there is an increasing number of people, particularly small business people, who are suffering under this system? Would he therefore tell the committee to do everything possible to expedite the matter, even if it is only by issuing an interim report?

The Attorney-General

My hon. Friend will appreciate that the matters which are being taken under review by the committee are difficult and complicated. The committee appreciate fully the necessity for pressing on with their deliberations and of being able to report in either a final or interim manner as soon as may be.
