HC Deb 06 July 1948 vol 453 cc182-3
5. Mr. Granville Sharp

asked the Secretary of State for War whether it is proposed to retain the beret as the normal headgear for the soldier; and when the berets issued will be of style and material which will enable the soldier to take a greater pride in his appearance.

Mr. Shinwell

The beret is to remain the normal headdress of the soldier except for Scottish and Irish regiments, who will wear bonnets. The issue of new coloured berets of smart appearance will, I hope, start at the end of this year.
