HC Deb 05 July 1948 vol 453 c18
34. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Minister of Transport from how many local authorities he has received protests against the proposed increase in the speed limit for heavy goods vehicles.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport (Mr. James Callaghan)

Seventy-three.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Does the hon. Gentleman propose to pay more attention to this very considerable manifestation of opinion by this very large number of elected local bodies?

Mr. Callaghan

It is not a large number in relation to the total number of local authorities. In any case, the House will have the opportunity of expressing its views on this matter before it is put into effect.

Mr. E. Fletcher

Can my hon. Friend say whether a great many of these protests came from the London area?

Mr. Callaghan

Not without notice.
