HC Deb 05 July 1948 vol 453 cc18-9
36. Sir William Darling

asked the Minister of Transport how many men have been transferred in 1948 from road building, maintenance and repair in Scotland; and how many have been transferred, respectively, to house building and to agriculture.

Mr. Callaghan

The number of road-men employed by Scottish highway authorities on 17th May, 1948, was 1,527 less than on 1st September, 1947. The figures asked for in the second part of the Question are not available.

Sir W. Darling

Was it not the intention of the Government to withdraw these men from road work in order to accelerate the building of houses and the improvement of agricultural production, and am I to understand from the reply that that result has not materialised?

Mr. Callaghan

No, Sir, it has materialised.
