HC Deb 26 January 1948 vol 446 c662
65. Mr. Vane

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware of the shortage of galvanised pipes for farm water supplies; and whether any cases of the misuse of such pipes as fencing material on housing estates have been brought to the attention of his Department.

Mr. T. Williams

Yes, Sir, I am aware of the shortage of galvanised pipes for all purposes including farm water supplies, and an instance of the use of these pipes for fencing on a housing estate has been brought to my notice. My right hon. Friend the Minister of Health has recently issued a circular asking local authorities not to use galvanised pipes for fencing because they are needed for more essential purposes.

Mr. Vane

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are many cases of this, and that he need not look any farther than St. James's Park, where the new, ugly fencing is composed largely of galvanised pipes which would probably be far better used as pipes? Surely, there ought to be an end to this misuse of this material.

Mr. Williams

Perhaps, the hon. Member will bring that to the notice of the Ministry of Works.
