HC Deb 12 February 1948 vol 447 c572
57. Mr. Amory

asked the Minister of Labour by what date it is estimated that the 38,000 Poles who were still in the Polish Resettlement Corps on 31st December last will have been absorbed into industry.

Mr. Isaacs

It is not possible to make a definite estimate, but everything is being done to get these men into employment as rapidly as possible. The fact that in a little over a year the size of the Corps has been reduced from about 109,000 to some 37,000 shows that good progress has so far been made.

Mr. Amory

While I appreciate the right hon. Gentleman's personal wish to see these men absorbed into industry, may I ask if he does not consider it rather out of line with our present national requirements that such a large number of men should be without useful employment?

Mr. Isaacs

The fact is that these men are actually absorbed into industry as soon as they can be set free from the Resettlement Corps. Under arrangements made another 7,000 are now available, and as soon as they come within reach of the Ministry of Labour they are very quickly put into a job.
