HC Deb 15 December 1948 vol 459 cc1188-9
18. Mr. Driberg

asked the Postmaster-General if he is aware that two British subjects of African descent, applying for employment as temporary postmen, were officially informed on Monday, 6th December, that such employment was available to white applicants only; and if he will give an assurance that his Department imposes no racial or colour discrimination in respect of such employment.

Mr. Wilfred Paling

British subjects of colour are eligible to be considered for employment as temporary postmen, and are being so employed. If my hon. Friend will give me particulars of the case in mind, I will have inquiry made.

Mr. Driberg

While I do not wish to bother my right hon. Friend about the particular case since I am asking the Minister of Labour about it tomorrow, can we then have the general assurance requested in the latter part of my Question?

Mr. Paling

My answer indicates that.
