HC Deb 15 December 1948 vol 459 c1181
6. Commander Noble

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty in how many ships under construction is work at present suspended.

Mr. Dugdale

Work is at present suspended on four light fleet carriers, three cruisers, one magnetic survey vessel and one small experimental vessel.

Commander Noble

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether the principal limiting factor in this case is the speed of development of new materials or a shortage of money?

Mr. Dugdale

Naturally both factors have to be taken into consideration. We have not an unlimited supply of money, but at the same time we want to see that we get the most up-to-date development possible, and in many cases it is desirable to wait for that before proceeding further.

Sir R. Ross

When will the work be recommenced on these vessels, or is it so indefinite that a date cannot be given?

Mr. Dugdale

Work in regard to one ship will be resumed quite early, but I cannot give an answer at the moment in regard to the other two.

Sir R. Ross

Is that the cruiser?

Mr. Dugdale

No, the light carrier.
