HC Deb 15 December 1948 vol 459 cc1187-8
14. Mr. Marlowe

asked the Postmaster-General why T. Jennings, an ex-Service man, of 62, Wordsworth Street, Hove, has been informed by letter, Reference DF 6074, that he cannot have casual employment over Christmas at the Brighton Post Office, though at a previous interview he had been told that work would be available for him as from 13th December; why an explanation was refused on his subsequent calling at the post office; and how many foreigners have been offered casual employment at Christmas by the Brighton Post Office.

Mr. Wilfred Paling

I am assured that Mr. Jennings was not informed that work would be available for him as from 13th December. He was told, in common with other applicants, that, if selected, he would be required about 13th December. When he subsequently called at the Brighton Post Office, he was informed that it had not been possible to find suitable employment for him. No aliens are being employed at the Brighton Post Office during the Christmas season.
