HC Deb 13 December 1948 vol 459 c822
29. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will appoint a committee to inquire into the desirability of erecting a bridge over the English Channel as the best method of providing adequate means of communication between the Continent and Great Britain.

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Barnes)

No, Sir.

Mr. Freeman

Will the Minister say why he will not consider setting up such a committee, in view of the urgent necessity of close association with the Continent at this time, both from the point of view of trade and in view of the fact that a tunnel is under consideration as a practical proposition? Will not the Minister set up an inquiry into this matter, especially in view of the fact that a tunnel is being considered?

Mr. Barnes

I am afraid that I do not consider this a very practical proposition, and I am much more concerned with using my technicians' ability to get on with schemes which can be brought to fruition.

Mr. Manningham-Buller

Would it not facilitate the transfer of funds to aid the Communist parties in Europe?
