§ 29. Mr. Peter Freemanasked the Minister of Transport whether he will appoint a committee to inquire into the desirability of erecting a bridge over the English Channel as the best method of providing adequate means of communication between the Continent and Great Britain.
§ The Minister of Transport (Mr. Barnes)No, Sir.
§ Mr. FreemanWill the Minister say why he will not consider setting up such a committee, in view of the urgent necessity of close association with the Continent at this time, both from the point of view of trade and in view of the fact that a tunnel is under consideration as a practical proposition? Will not the Minister set up an inquiry into this matter, especially in view of the fact that a tunnel is being considered?
§ Mr. BarnesI am afraid that I do not consider this a very practical proposition, and I am much more concerned with using my technicians' ability to get on with schemes which can be brought to fruition.
§ Mr. Manningham-BullerWould it not facilitate the transfer of funds to aid the Communist parties in Europe?
