HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 cc1791-2
56. Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why it is the policy of His Majesty's Government to insist on payment in sterling for exports to the Argentine; and what steps are taken to limit the number of accounts from which such sterling may be drawn.

Sir S. Cripps

In accordance with the Economic Agreement of 17th September, 1946, trade with Argentina both ways is in sterling, now as in the past. Payments for exports to Argentina can be made from approved accounts only.

Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

Does that mean that all our imports from the Argentine are now paid for in sterling?

Sir S. Cripps

Yes, Sir, it means that the account is kept in sterling both ways.
