HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 c1791
55. Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the number of special accounts recognised by the Bank of England under paragraph 3 (b) of S.R. & O., No. 1785, dated 20th August, 1947.

Sir S. Cripps

None, Sir. The Treasury Order referred to ceased to have effect on 1st October. It was in effect replaced by S.R. & O., 1947, No. 2072, under which six accounts are so recognised.

Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

Can the Chancellor say why the particular category of six accounts had to be instituted for one particular South American country?

Sir S. Cripps

They were instituted under this Act for the purposes of the regulation set out in the regulation which instituted them.

Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

While I thank the Chancellor for that most illuminating answer, may I ask him why this particular South American country has been selected for this treatment?

Sir S. Cripps

No, Sir, I would not be prepared to say that.
