HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 cc1788-9
50. Mr. De la Bère

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, with a view to encouraging a greater demand for land to increase our national food production, and to stimulate a greater effort by all concerned, he will consider granting a small rebate of Income Tax to all allotment holders.

Sir S. Cripps

Much as I appreciate the efforts made by allotment holders, I am afraid that I could not adopt the hon. Member's suggestion. I would remind him that Schedule B tax is not in practice charged on allotments.

Mr. De la Bère

Can the right hon. and learned Gentleman give an assurance that at least something will be done to give real security of tenure, in view of the importance of increased food production, which is needed by the country today, especially in potatoes?

Sir S. Cripps

That is quite a different question.

Mr. De la Bère

The Government are doing nothing about potatoes.
