HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 c1789
51. Mr. Keeling

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer for what reason the recent French proposal for resumption of tourist traffic to France was rejected.

Sir S. Cripps

I have nothing to add to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for West Leicester (Mr. Janner) on 28th October.

Mr. Keeling

But does the Chancellor know that no reason was then given? Is he also aware that, according to "The Times" of 6th November, an official announcement was made in Paris after an Anglo-French Conference, stating that the British Government took the view that foreign travel by the wealthy and leisured classes was an infringement of the austerity principle? Is that correct, and is he aware that a great number of wage earners, whether wealthy or not, would like to travel to France?

Sir S. Cripps

I am not prepared to make any alteration in the arrangements made by my predecessor, as stated on 28th October.

Mr. Keeling

I beg to give notice that I will raise the matter again.
