HC Deb 17 November 1947 vol 444 cc786-7
9. Mr. Michael Foot

asked the Minister of Transport the average number of road lorries supplied to the road haulage organisations in this country in prewar years; the number supplied in the war years; the number being supplied this year; and the number it is proposed to supply next year.

Mr. Callaghan

As the answer involves a number of figures I propose, with my hon. Friend's permission, to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT, but the House will be glad to know that the number of vehicles first registered in 1947 is about 70 per cent. higher than in prewar year.

Following is the answer:

No information is available relating specifically to "lorries" in the various types of road goods vehicles, or to the numbers of vehicles supplied to particular organisations or bodies.

The total numbers of road goods vehicles registered for the first time (excluding certain vehicles of special types or for special purposes) were as follow:

Average per annum during four years 1936–39 71,738
Average per annum during six years 1940–45 19,548
Year 1946 100,714
Year 1947 (Estimated) 120,000

The programme for 1948 is not finally fixed, but owing to export demands will be much smaller than 1947.
