HC Deb 17 November 1947 vol 444 c786
6. Lieut.-Commander Gurney Braithwaite

asked the Minister of Transport on what grounds the allocation of petrol to hearses has been, reduced by 25 per cent.

Mr. Callaghan

There has been a general cut of 10 per cent., not 25 per cent. Supplementary allowances are granted by the Regional Transport Commissioner if the operator can prove need.

Lieut.-Commander Braithwaite

Has a complementary regulation been issued prohibiting death; and, if so, what penalty arises for those who break it?

Mr. Callaghan

I am not sure, but the only operator of hearses I can find in Beverley has not made any application for fuel since last December owing to lack of business.

Mr. E. P. Smith

Will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that the percentage of suicides has risen steeply since the present Government assumed office?
