HC Deb 13 November 1947 vol 444 c526
15. Mr. Piratin

asked the President of the Board of Trade why salt has been imported from Spain when English salt is available.

Mr. H. Wilson

Imports are necessary because the output of coarse salt in this country is not sufficient to meet requirements, particularly for the fish curing industry and for snow clearing purposes.

Mr. Piratin

Is the Minister aware that there was a report in an East Anglian paper to the effect that salt was delivered at Lowestoft from Spain when salt was available in this country, and that the reason given was lack of transport? Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether that is the case? If so, will he take it up with the Ministry accordingly?

Mr. Wilson

No. Sir, I have not seen that report. I should be very glad to look into it, but the quantity of salt available from home production is not sufficient to meet all our needs.
