HC Deb 12 November 1947 vol 444 cc388-9
63. Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Food why flour supplied to the Grimsby and District Bakery Trade Association members has been bad and fusty, so that bread made from it has not been fit for human consumption; and what explanation has been given to the complaint made by the Association, a copy of which has been sent to him.

Dr. Summerskill

Wheat is sometimes slightly affected by being stowed as part cargo with timber. This shows itself when the flour is made into bread. Although such flour is not injurious to health, the consignment referred to is being withdrawn and a full explanation is being sent to the Grimsby and District Bakery Trade Association.

Mr. Osborne

Does not the Minister think it is a real scandal that fusty flour should be sent to Grimsby to be made into bread, which the bakers themselves say is not fit for human consumption? Will she see that it does not happen again—at least in that district?
