HC Deb 12 November 1947 vol 444 c386
59. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food whether he is satisfied that his White Paper, "Food Consumption Levels in U.K.", reveals a complete picture; and in view of the fact that numbers of people in Canada are generously sending food parcels for which His Majesty's Government is paying freight, and that the White Paper has created confusion in the minds of Canadians about the true position, if he will issue a further White Paper to make it clear whether the continued sending of food parcels is necessary.

Dr. Summerskill

The answer to the first part of the Question is "Yes, Sir," but I do not think the report has created confusion abroad. It brings out clearly the decline in the consumption of meat, eggs, fats, sugar and fruit, which in one form or another are generally included in these most welcome food parcels.

Sir W. Smithers

Whatever the hon. Lady may think, is she aware that it is a fact that a very wrong impression has been created among the kind people of Canada, and in view of the further cuts in food which have been recently announced, will she issue another White Paper so that the true facts may once more be put across to the Canadian people?

Dr. Summerskill

The answer to both parts of the question is, "No, Sir."
