HC Deb 06 November 1947 vol 443 cc1973-4
6. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Minister of Education whether he is satisfied that his regulations ensure that the standard of attainment for admission to a county secondary grammar school is uniform throughout the areas covered by any local education authority so that a successful pupil's educational opportunity is not jeopardised by the accident of his family's removal to another part of the administrative county.

Mr. Tomlinson

The selection of pupils for admission to grammar schools is primarily a matter for the local education authorities. If, however, the hon. Member has any particular difficulties in mind, perhaps he would write to me.

Mr. Skinnard

Is it permissible for the committee of an excepted district to offer a grammar school place to a pupil whom they subsequently report, on his removal to another district, as not having reached the standard of marks prescribed by the county authority?

Mr. Tomlinson

That sounds a little too complicated for me to answer at the moment. If my hon. Friend will put the problem in the form of a letter to me I will give him an answer.
