HC Deb 19 May 1947 vol 437 cc1997-8
68. T. Reid

asked the Minister of Food how the present price of U.S. wheat compares with the average price in 1946.

Mr. Strachey

The present price of No. 2 Hard Winter U.S.A wheat is about £27 16s. per ton f.o.b. A weighted average price for 1946 is not available, but prices ranged from £18 10s. to £24 per ton f.o.b.

Mr. Reid

Was the rise in price caused by the removal of price controls in the United States?

Mr. Strachey

One must not offer dogmatic opinions on economic causes in the United States, but I should think it was a most important factor.

Mr. Baldwin

In view of the prices just disclosed by the Minister, will he say what price has been paid to the English farmer for his wheat?

Mr. Strachey

Not without notice.
