HC Deb 19 May 1947 vol 437 c2006
57. Mr. Medlicott

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he is aware that farmers in Norfolk who were instructed to send their sugar beet to Felstead when the Cantley factory was closed during the fuel crisis have, as a result, lost the value of 1½ cwt. of pulp per 1 ton of beet; and what steps he is taking to make good to these farmers the pulp which they normally rely upon as feedingstuff.

Mr. T. Williams

Growers who failed to complete their deliveries of sugar beet to the Cantley factory before it was closed at the end of the campaign were given the opportunity, but not instructed, to send their remaining beet to Felstead. The supplementary contracts made for this beet do not entitle growers to any delivery of sugar beet pulp. Supplies of pulp are barely sufficient to provide the contracted quantity of pulp to growers who comply with their original contracts, and I regret, therefore, that there is nothing left for issue against supplementary contracts. Where need can be established such growers can apply to their county committees for an issue of feedingstuffs from county discretionary reserves.
