HC Deb 19 May 1947 vol 437 c2000
75. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware that quantities of Danish potatoes held by East London retailers are in poor condition; what redress purchasers or retailers can secure for potatoes of poor quality; and what action is taken to see that imported potatoes are up to sample.

Mr. Strachey

There have only been a few adverse reports on these potatoes. Allowances will be made if the potatoes are not up to standard, providing my Department is informed of the complaint before the bulk is broken; and the buyer has the normal rights of inspection and rejection before taking delivery. The potatoes are inspected on behalf of the Danish Government before shipment, and deliveries have complied with the requirement that they shall be of standard merchantable quality.

Mr. Sorensen

Has the Minister had complaints regarding Danish potatoes and the softness of their nature, because they are quite inedible?

Mr. Strachey

We have had a few, but not large complaints.

Mr. Sorensen

Could the Minister say what action has been taken regarding those complaints; and does not that indicate that this particular consignment must have been very bad?

Mr. Strachey

No, Sir. There is always a certain percentage of bad potatoes in any sample, and they have been within the normal limit of tolerance.
