HC Deb 19 May 1947 vol 437 cc2007-8
59. Mr. Lipson

asked the Minister of Agriculture if, in view of the recent flooding in the valley of the Severn, he will take early action to meet the need for a comprehensive flood prevention scheme for the Severn Valley.

Mr. T. Williams

My Department has received a preliminary report from the River Severn Catchment Board on the recent floods in their area. This is being considered in preparation for early discussions with the Board on long-term works for flood prevention.

Mr. Lipson

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether he has received any communication from the Cheltenham Rural District Council about this matter, and will he communicate with them?

Mr. Williams

I am not certain whether any communication has been received direct from them, but I will make sure that they know what steps are being taken.

Mr. Berry

Will my right hon. Friend consult the Minister of Fuel and Power so that the steps proposed to be taken may be combined with the Severn Barrage Scheme for the generation of electricity?

Mr. Williams

r think that will be inevitable.
