HC Deb 15 May 1947 vol 437 c1706
71. Mrs. Middleton

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power, what guidance or instructions he proposes to issue to the medical profession in connection with the granting of medical certificates allowing the use of gas and electricity for spaceheating purposes in residential premises.

Mr. Gaitskell

My right hon. Friend does not consider that any special instruction is necessary for such a purpose.

Mrs. Middleton

Can my hon. Friend say whether any steps are being taken by the Ministry to see that there is no abuse of these certificates by citizens who have really no claim to consideration?

Mr. Gaitskell

We have already considerable experience of this matter, and I have no reason to suppose that the medical profession do not honourably carry out the heavy burdens which, I am afraid, we are obliged to impose upon them.

Mrs. Middleton

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that, nonetheless, there has been considerable abuse in other directions?
