HC Deb 27 March 1947 vol 435 c1400
54. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the short age of skilled labour for repairing watches, clocks and spectacles; and whether, in view of the fact that such repairs can be carried out rapidly in France, Switzerland and other European countries, arrangements will be made to import a certain number of craftsmen to carry out this work in this country.

Mr. Isaacs

Yes, Sir, and 'training schemes are in operation for the purpose of meeting this position. Meantime, any applications received from employers for permission to employ foreign workers will be considered subject to the usual safeguards.
