HC Deb 27 March 1947 vol 435 c1385
35. Mr. K. Lindsay

asked the Minister of Education if he will make a statement about the deductions made from the vacation earnings of students who are in receipt of Government grants.

Mr. Tomlinson

This matter, which concerns other Departments as well as my own, is under consideration, but it is not yet possible to make a statement in the matter.

Mr. Lindsay

Will the right hon. Gentleman try to hurry up this statement? He said he would three or four weeks ago, and the Prime Minister gave a sympathetic reply, and the Easter vacation has now started

Mr. Tomlinson

I am aware of the necessity for speeding this up, and I ought to be in a position to make a statement immediately after Easter.

Mr. Wilson Harris

Does the right hon. Gentleman not realise the gross hardship this imposes on those who have to pay their board and lodging during the vacation, and when they have earned something to pay for it, they have to hand 50 per cent. to the Minister of Education?

Mr. Tomlinson

It was because I realised that there was a hardship that I promised to look into it.
