HC Deb 01 July 1947 vol 439 cc1131-2
17. Mr. Bramall

asked the Secretary of State for War what share of the cost of maintaining the Ukrainian prisoners of war taken from the SS. Division, Galizien, was borne by the British and United States authorities, respectively, whilst these prisoners of war were in Italy; and what share is being borne by each of these two Governments now that these men have been brought to this country.

Mr. Bellenger

The whole cost of maintaining these men falls on His Majesty's Government, except that the cost of supplies, etc., obtained from local resources while the men were in Italy fell on the Italian Government. There are no arrangements with the United States Government for sharing the cost of prisoners of war: each Government bears the cost of prisoners of war held by it.

Mr. Bramall

Does my right hon. Friend think that it is a satisfactory use of our resources to keep men from this division, who were guilty of the most incredible brutality during the war?

Mr. Bellenger

No, Sir. I do not know that these men fall into that category entirely. They have been brought here as prisoners of war, they are being dealt with in the ordinary way, and those suitable for employment in this country will be found occupations.
