HC Deb 01 July 1947 vol 439 cc1129-30
36. Mr. Grimston

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will reconsider the request of the Westbury Urban District Council for the Leighton sports ground at Westbury. Wiltshire.

Mr. J. Freeman

This question has been re-examined but, as the hon. Member has been informed, I regret that it is not possible to alter the previous decision.

Mr. Grimston

Having regard to the fact that this ground is very little used by the Army, is it not possible to make it available to the council with some security of tenure, so that they can develop it as a local recreation ground which is badly needed in the town?

Mr. Freeman

This ground belongs to the Army and is not being used extensively at the moment. I think it will be used extensively in the near future. In the meantime, I am only too anxious that we should be able to accommodate the local council, and if they will get together with the local military authorities, I will do the best I can to ensure that they get facilities.
