HC Deb 27 February 1947 vol 433 c2269
32. Mr. John McKay

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will remove the absolute ban upon the use of greyhound racing tracks by some form of relaxation, seeing that football pool establishments and cinemas are allowed to continue as usual and these consume more electricity than the greyhound racing tracks.

Mr. Shinwell

This matter is under consideration.

Mr. Godfrey Nicholson

Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind that there are places which do not use electric light, as they generally operate in the afternoon.

Mr. Shinwell

We have that matter under review.

Mr. McKay

Is my right hon. Friend aware that a large percentage of our people like to have a little gamble, and that it is inadvisable to take steps to prevent that without proper discussion in this House? Would he consider the advisability of relaxing the restriction?

Mr. Shinwell

We have that matter in mind now.

Mr. Delargy

Is my right hon. Friend aware that his decision in this matter has given general satisfaction, and will he take steps to see that the restriction is continued, not only during the winter, but during the summer as well, in view of the fact that most people concerned with greyhound racing are social parasites?
