HC Deb 27 February 1947 vol 433 cc2269-70
36. Mr. De la Bére

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what steps he proposes to take to adjust the loss the consumers arising out of the electricity cuts and reduction in voltage, in view of the fact that it is estimated that this practice tends to cause electricity meters to read fast and adds to the expenses of householders throughout the country.

Mr. Shinwell

I am advised that, in general, meters only register the amount of energy consumed, and that such registration is not affected by a reduction of voltage.

Mr. De la Bére

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I like to get ahead with things, and that it has been demonstrated by informed authorities that meters tend to read fast when there is a low volume of supply? Will he make further inquiries into this matter?

Mr. Shinwell

I understand that direct current meters show a small drop, but it is negligible.
