HC Deb 03 February 1947 vol 432 cc1396-7
59. Mr. Douglas Marshall

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the fact that there is only one commercial producer of bamboo canes in the United Kingdom and in view of the country's critical foreign exchange position, he will take steps to encourage the bamboo-growing industry in Cornwall.

Mr. T. Williams

I am aware of the difficulties of obtaining adequate supplies of bamboo canes at present, but I am advised that owing to climatic and other difficulties there is no prospect of producing home-grown bamboo canes which would provide a satisfactory substitute for imported canes for use in horticulture. I should not, therefore, feel justified in supporting special measures to encourage bamboo growing in Cornwall.
