HC Deb 17 April 1947 vol 436 cc342-3
77. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Education if he will give an estimate of the extra number of teachers, Civil Service staff and other personnel which are needed in connection with the raising of the school-leaving age; and what proportion of these is now available.

The Minister of Education (Mr. Tomlinson)

On the subject of additional teachers I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for Salisbury (Mr. J. Morrison) on 20th March, a copy of which I am sending him. The requirements of the Education Act, 1944, which include the raising of the compulsory school age, have made it necessary to increase the staff of my Department, but no separate estimate is available of the staff required specifically for this latter purpose.

Mr. Janner

Can my right hon. Friend say whether he has the full staffs necessary for the purpose now? Does he anticipate any difficulty in getting the staffs?

Mr. Tomlinson

No, Sir.
