HC Deb 17 April 1947 vol 436 cc335-6
50. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Labour how many men will he liable to be called up for military service under the terms of the National Service Bill in each of the years from 1949 to 1954, inclusive.

Mr. Isaacs

It is estimated that the number of men becoming liable, as distinct from available, for call-up under the terms of the National Service Bill in each of the years 1949 to 1954 will vary between 310,000 and 330,000. These numbers will include men medically unfit for service, volunteers joining the Regular forces before reaching the age of 18, and men whose call-up will be deferred It is not possible at present to state precisely how many will actually be available for call-up it each of the years stated but it is estimated that the average will be between 200,000 and 225,000 a year.
