HC Deb 01 April 1947 vol 435 cc1814-5
6. Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is now in a position to make a statement regarding the cost of living for the families of married men serving in B.A.O.R.

Mr. J. Freeman

The inquiries which have been made have not revealed any marked disparity in the cost of living for soldiers' families in Germany as compared with home stations. Families in Germany are provided by the Army with accommodation and food at reasonable charges, and arrangements have recently been made to introduce a special ration suitable to the needs of small children. It should not, therefore, be necessary for the families to, incur any appreciable expense in the purchase of food from other sources

Colonel Gomme-Duncan

May we assume that, although certain extra items of rations are to be issued, there is no necessity revealed by the inquiry for any increase in allowances?

Mr. Freeman

Generally speaking, that is so, but it is partly another question.
