HC Deb 31 October 1946 vol 428 cc765-6
25. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General the total aggregate receipts in the last completed year from letters and parcels; and what were the receipts from 1d. matter.

Mr. Burke

The total estimated cash receipts for 1945–46 from letters and parcels were approximately £52½ million and from printed papers about £6½ million.

Sir W. Smithers

In view of the large receipts from the penny matter—as I understand it is technically called—is it not reasonable to suppose that if the 2½d. stamp is reduced to 2d. the increased traffic will make up for any loss?

Mr. Burke

That is hypothetical. I do not think so.

Sir W. Smithers

Try it.
