HC Deb 30 October 1946 vol 428 cc585-6
II. Sir Ronald Ross

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, in view of the sale of H.M.S. "Enchantress," what steps are being taken to provide a vessel suitable for use as an Admiralty yacht.

Mr. Dugdale

In the interests of economy, no steps are being taken for the time being to provide a successor to H.M.S. "Enchantress."

Sir R. Ross

Is it not extremely important that political heads, and in particular the present political heads, of the Government, should keep in touch with the Fleet by going to see it? Is it appreciated that the "Enchantress" was capable of, and actually did, remarkably good work as an escort vessel?

Mr. Dugdale

Certainly, Sir. I quite realise all that. She did very good service, but there are many luxuries that we have to forgo, and the "Enchantress" is one of them.
