HC Deb 29 October 1946 vol 428 cc422-3
6. Mr. Wyatt

asked the Minister of Town and Country Planning what is the proportion of public houses to the population proposed in the planning of new towns and housing estates; on what statistical or other data has the proportion contemplated been arrived at; and whether it is proposed to erect as a general policy large publichouses or small ones.

Mr. F. Marshall

The question of the form and character of refreshment places in the new towns is still under consideration.

Mr. Wyatt

is the Minister aware that I did not ask about refreshment places, which presumably includes establishments for the sale of tea and other lukewarm fluids? I referred to public houses.

Mr. Marshall

I take it that my hon. Friend will agree that beer is regarded as refreshment.

Mr. Leslie

Cannot this matter be left to the residents and to the licensing bench?

Mr. Anthony Greenwood

Will my hon. Friend consider the possibility of applying the principles of the Carlisle experiment to the new towns?

Mr. Marshall

I am afraid I could not commit myself beyond the answer which I have already given.

Mr. Scollan

Has any step been taken to consult the local authorities on this question?

Mr. Marshall

No, Sir.

Sir W. Smithers

Has any consideration been given to the provision of churches, chapels and assembly halls?

Mr. Marshall

All those matters will be taken into consideration in the planning of the new towns.
